Antique Japanese Folk Jute Horse Animal Figure Hachinohe Style Early/Mid 20th Century

authentic Japanese folk art straw-bodied animal horse figure, attributed to the Hachinohe region of Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan.

This piece features a hand-carved wooden head with bold painted decoration in red, blue, black, white, and gold tones, attached to a traditional straw (wara) body. The animal appears to represent a protective agricultural guardian figure, likely inspired by a horse in rural festival and talismanic traditions.

Originally, objects of this type were associated with local folk rituals and seasonal festivals, and were not intended as purely decorative works. The wooden base was likely added later for display.

Based on construction, pigments, and overall wear, this piece is estimated to date to the early–mid 20th century (circa 1920s–1950s).
• Hand-carved wood
• Painted pigments
• Straw / natural fiber
• Wood display base (added later)
